Quick Release Pedals Or Folding Pedals - Decision time? |
|
As of recent, more and more folding bike riders are switching to quick release (QR) pedals citing advantages over the standard folding pedal. Also, Folding Bike manufacturer Dahon has being shipping QR pedals as standard on some of its models.
So what are the advantages of quick release pedals over folding pedals?
- With the pedal unclipped, the base does not stick out from the crank near as far as a folded pedal.
- The base is smooth and is much less likely to scratch or catch on something than a folding pedal.
- They are more solid than any folding pedal leading to lower pedal failure rate.
- It's easy to switch platform types or switch pedals between bikes.
- They will accept toe clips and/or straps.
- Removing the pedals is an easy extra deterrent to ride-away thieves.

The Melon Slice - Folding Bike Review |
|
Melon Bicycles is a bike company that started with the goal to produce
a folding bike that would ride well enough to be an alternative to
conventional comfort, fitness, hybrid, and commuter bicycles. The
resulting bike, the slice, has a solid and sturdy formed 7005 aluminum
frame that rides incredibly stiff. It reminds one of a bmx bike with
its quick starting ability and incredible maneuverability, yet offers
a comfortable upright riding position. In many ways, a 20" wheel bike
is more suited to urban/commuting/bike fitness trail riding and Melon
would like to eventually be known as "The 20" Wheel Bike Company".
